Using MLS to look for land.

It is on days like this, where the snow is half a foot thick, that I wonder why I’m in British Columbia. A long growing season is a major factor in finding land, if you not limiting yourself to where your looking. British Columbia has the longest growing season in Canada, it’s climate is moderate, and there is plenty of rain to boot. However, good top soil is hard to come by, on the sunshine coast it literally has to be imported. The rocky surface does not a good garden make.

Canada has a multi listing service for real estate that covers all of Canada, it has recently been upgraded to selective searches for different types of land use, including raw land, and agriculture use. If you use a tabbed browser like firefox, you can run two searches on two different provinces side by side to compare what is available in each, and get an idea of what is similar and different. I’ve been comparing Ontario to British Columbia, and to be honest there really isn’t any comparison. Ontario is where it is at if you want have a farm, or even raw land.

For example, I created a really basic search for the two provinces, which included searching the entire province, not a given area that I would move to, I choose the Agricultural tab in each tab, and limited not by location in the provinces but by price ($0 – $500,000), Land Size (19 – 126) acres and nothing else to limit the search. (Side note: I’ve also been using www.niho.com )
